How much is that paint?
A new study released today by the University of Illinois found that most people do not know that bathroom paint is actually made from petroleum products.
The study was commissioned by the American Petroleum Institute, and the findings, published in the journal Energy Policy, are based on responses to a survey conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in 2011.
“We were very interested in this, because this is a new field,” said David Shukla, assistant professor of environmental engineering and environmental science and one of the study’s authors.
“We’ve been using petroleum products for years to produce a wide variety of products and it has been very successful.
So we wanted to understand what other things are out there that are making our environment worse.”
In the survey, respondents were asked to identify the ingredients in products that they had purchased, whether they had used them before and how long they had been using them.
The researchers found that the ingredients included: oil, liquid or solid, propylene glycol, propyl alcohol, glycerin, glyceryl glycol and ethylhexylglycerin.
They also found that: Ethylhexylene glycerine was used as a solvent, and in some cases a coloring agent.
Propylene glycin was used in the formulation of the products.
Propylene glycere was used to manufacture the products and to bind them together.
Ethyl hexylglycine was also used to bind the ingredients together.
The report found that some of the ingredients that were listed in the survey could actually be hazardous chemicals.
“These are substances that we have known for a long time to be dangerous,” ShukLA said.
“It’s a very complex chemistry and it’s hard to know exactly what they’re doing.
It is certainly a very dangerous chemical.”
Some of the chemicals were listed as “non-toxic” by the NIOSH, while some were listed by the agency as “potentially hazardous,” Shuzla said.
In other cases, they were listed for a short period of time.
“There are a number of chemicals that we know that are being used in manufacturing and in the production of the cosmetic industry that are listed as potentially hazardous by the EPA,” ShuKla said, “but that’s a small subset of these chemicals.”
In other words, the report found no evidence that those chemicals cause cancer or other health problems.
The report also found no link between the chemicals used in cosmetic products and other environmental issues.
A spokesperson for NIOSH confirmed that the agency does not conduct research on the safety of the substances listed on the survey.
“This is not a scientific study,” the spokesperson said.
“The chemicals in this survey were not identified as hazardous by our testing laboratory,” ShukaLA said, referring to the NIOS lab that performs laboratory testing for chemicals that are added to products.
“The EPA does not test cosmetic products for the presence of hazardous chemicals.”
The report also shows that a large number of people are unaware that these substances are in their products.
In addition to the number of respondents who had not used the products, ShukLa and ShukLabs also found the majority of people who responded to the survey said that they did not know about the chemicals in the products they were purchasing.
Shukla said he was surprised by the response.
“I don’t think many people would have any idea that this is happening, even if it was mentioned in the article,” he said.
ShukLA believes that the study provides important information to help the public understand the chemicals that they are buying.
“If we want to prevent the contamination of our environments and our children, we need to understand the chemical composition of our products,” ShuyLabs said.
